Corinne’s blog this week got me thinking…her choice of frock for Sophs’ nuptials would be seen by some to be a big no-no in terms of wedding etiquette…so the burning question is ‘Is it still a faux-pas to wear white (let’s include off white and cream too) to a wedding?’

These days some traditions have gone out the window and fashions certainly have changed with a bit more of an 'anything goes' attitude. Fifteen years ago having shoes a different colour from your bag would have been frowned upon at a social do! I decided to do a quick straw poll with my trusty advisors on the white at a wedding dilemna. Corinne’s standpoint was clear…and Ems agreed, although with the caveat that a white maxi dress would be a bit much…Yin told us all the story of her friend who got married and whose ‘crazy aunt’ turned up in what could only be considered a wedding dress which, when you see the pictures did look somewhat inappropriate! Porsh takes the traditionalist standpoint too, rightly pointing out that there will always be someone who thinks it is inappropriate for a guest to be in white/cream and when the bridal party are spending thousands of pounds on their special day then possibly the guests should exercise a little restraint on their own attire! Having said that Carol believes that it is never possible to upstage the bride on her big day! Lisa was in two minds, not least because she has a darling white frock she would like to wear to a wedding next week and is still deliberating!

It is a subject which has prompted much debate. Ems and I agreed that possibly wearing white/cream as a guest to a wedding could now-a-days be seen as acceptable if the frock has a splash of colour or you are wearing contrasting accessories! There is also the question of the Bride – if she is likely to be a Bridezilla then possibly colour is the way forward or you will be ‘photoshop-ped’ out of all the pictures – or in a worst case scenario asked to leave!

I would love to hear what others think… – can Lisa wear her white frock to her friend’s wedding next weekend? Answers on a postcard…alternatively drop me an email rachel.perrett@frockonline.com

I will leave you with an (unnamed for obvious reasons) friend’s retort:

‘When I wore cream to a wedding I looked better than the bride and the bridesmaids!’ …

I’d better remember that if I ever get married!

Re: A white wedding! ... and that's just the guests!    By Lucy D on 13/06/2008
I think Lisa should go for it and wear her white frock! Carol is right that no-one can outshine the bride on her big day and fashions do dictate that white is the colour of choice for this season! Maybe she could make a few subtle inquiries as to the Bride's feelings on the subject. Lucy x

Great topic! I get married next month and I have to say I would be a bit put out if someone turned up in a white dress...however I did go to a wedding last saturday and there were 2 girls in off white!

It's an honour (if an expensive and sometimes dubious one) to be invited to a wedding. Consider the bride's feelings and,. unless you really hate her, steer clear of anything remotely bridal. Wedding photos are for life, not just a season when "white was the colour of choice" and the guest who transgresses good manners may be judged harshly.

Well - having been toa wedding in Spain last year where one of the key guests (a reader) turned up in a dress that could have been an informal wedding dress (lacey, cream) with the addition of a hair-do more done than the bride and a very classy stole, you can take it too far!

I think white and cream are OK with pattern or beading in a diferent colour but avoid the hair do and bridal accessories!!!!!
